惠灵顿“世界杯”拉近了整个社区的距离

Wellington’s World Cup Festival brings the community closer together

Grades, test scores and elite university offers are important metrics for any school, but they never give you the full picture. At the heart of every successful school is a strong, tightly-knit community of parents, pupils and teachers bound together with a common mission and common values. But strong school communities do not just learn together. They have fun together too, which is why Wellington College International Shanghai held its first-ever Wellington World Cup Football Festival.

对于大多数学校而言,成绩、考试成绩和精英大学录取分数都是重要的衡量标准,但它们永远无法呈现出一所名校的精髓。每一所成功学校的核心是由家长、学生和教师共同组成的紧密团结的社区,在这里,他们肩负着共同的使命,也拥有着共同的价值观。强大的学校社区并不仅限于共同学习,所有成员在这里同样也要学会享受愉悦身心的美好时光。这就是为什么海惠灵顿外籍人员子女学校举办了有史以来第一届惠灵顿世界杯足球节。

Wellington was not going to let the competition in Qatar steal the spotlight. The school community came together for a fun-filled day of friendly matches between pupils, parents and teachers. The day marked the official debut of Welly the Lion, the school’s brand-new mascot, who will soon be a fixture at all Wellington sporting events. Festivities culminated in an action-packed match between Wellington parents and teachers (the teachers clinched it, 5-0, by the way!).  The day was a celebration of the beautiful game, but, like World Cup, it was also a celebration of diversity. With pupils, parents, and teachers from over 43 countries and territories, Wellington is a global community unto itself.   

与如火如荼的卡塔尔世界杯相比,惠灵顿“世界杯“也独具魅力。不同学生、家长和教师进行了一场充满乐趣的友谊赛,趣味盎然,令人难忘。这一天也是学校的全新吉祥物“雄狮威利”(Welly The Lion)的正式亮相日,它很快就将成为惠灵顿的所有体育赛事的固定嘉宾。在这一天,我们大肆庆祝这场精彩比赛的成功,惠灵顿家长和教师之间精彩纷呈的比赛将此次盛会推向了高潮(顺便说一下,教师队最终以5:0获胜!)。和世界杯一样,惠灵顿“世界杯“也呈现出了多元化的氛围。惠灵顿拥有来自43个国家和地区的学生、家长和教师,我们是一个全球社区。

Opportunities for learning outside the classroom

饶有趣味的课外学习

 

To even the casual observer, the immediate benefits of such a day are clear. There is the obvious physical fitness component. Healthy, happy pupils learn to move and move to learn. And sport is one of the key pillars of Wellington’s holistic education provision. Pupils also learn important social skills like teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship and fair play. Moreover, a bit of fun and friendly competition breaks down barriers as it builds cohesion; pupils even forge friendships across year groups. 

这一天的活动是富有意义的。显而易见,所有人都锻炼和提高了自己的身体素质。健康、快乐的学生懂得如何运动,也能够在运动中学有所长。体育运动是惠灵顿提供的整体教育中关键的支柱之一。在体育运动中,学生们有机会学习许多重要的社会技能,如团队合作、领导力、体育精神和公平竞争。此外,良性竞争也可以打破障碍,因为它可以建立凝聚力;学生们甚至能够跨年级建立友谊。

 

There were other opportunities for holistic learning as well. For instance, the all-new Wellington Lions Dance squad made their first appearance. They put on spectacular performances throughout the day. Performance is another important component of holistic learning. It is a powerful confidence builder. It teaches discipline and collaboration as well.  

我们还会提供其他的整体教育机会。例如,全新的惠灵顿舞狮队在此次活动中首次亮相,全天奉献了精彩纷呈的表演。表演是整体教育的另一个重要组成部分,不仅有助于建立强大的信心,而且也教导了孩子们如何遵守纪律和团队协作。

 

Additionally, Wellington’s aspiring sportscasters had the chance to hone their skills through Dukebox, Wellington’s new programme that teaches multimedia journalism. The Dukebox team were on the sidelines reporting on all the action of the day with on-camera interviews of players and spectators. Meanwhile, they developed soft skills, like communication and curiosity. 

此外,有抱负的惠灵顿运动员还有机会通过校园电台(Dukebox)(惠灵顿的全新多媒体新闻节目)展现自己的竞技技能。校园电台团队现场报道了当天的所有活动,并对球员和观众进行了实时采访。与此同时,他们也积极培养了各项软技能,如沟通能力和好奇心。

Building communities, building bridges 

构建强大社区,搭建沟通的桥梁

But it was not just the pupils who benefited. Teachers and parents had the opportunity to get acquainted in a less formal setting, building greater trust and promoting more openness. Parents also got to meet other parents and expand their circles of friends. 

但受益的不仅仅是学生。教师和家长也有机会在非正式场合中结识,这能让双方建立更强大的信任,促进更全面的开放。家长也有机会结识其他家长,扩大了他们的朋友圈。

 

The wider community benefitted too. Proceeds from all ticket sales to the event were donated to the charity Stepping Stones. The school raised an impressive RMB 50,000 that will help under-resourced schools in Shanghai and surrounding areas. This was not just good fun for a great cause. Kindness is one of Wellington’s Five Values, service learning is integral to the school’s curriculum. Throughout their careers at Wellington, pupils are encouraged to engage in community outreach, whether it is charity initiatives or Creativity, Activity, Service projects in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. 

更广泛的社区也会从中受益。此次活动的所有门票销售收入都捐给了慈善机构“Stepping Stones”。学校筹集了5万元人民币,用于帮助上海及周边地区的资源不足的学校。这不仅仅是一场有趣的活动,也是一项伟大事业。善良是惠灵顿的五大价值观之一,学习服务公共事业是学校课程的组成部分。在惠灵顿的整个发展过程中,我们始终鼓励学生参与社区外联活动,既可以是慈善活动,也可以是国际文凭课程中的创意、活动和服务项目。

 

One Wellington pupil even saw the event as an opportunity to widen the school’s focus to issues of international concern. Year X pupil Catarina wanted to raise awareness of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). So, she set up a photo booth with a green screen and photographed parents and teachers. She then superimposed over the green background a graphic declaring which SDG they chose to commit to. It was a creative, meaningful action and a pure expression of Wellington’s mission to cultivate globally-minded citizens of the world. 

惠灵顿的一名学生甚至将此次活动视为拓展学校关注国际问题的机会。十年级学生Catarina希望提高对联合国可持续发展目标(SDG)的认知。于是,她设立了一个带有绿幕的照相亭,给父母和老师拍照。然后在绿幕上叠加一张图片,宣布他们选择了哪一个可持续发展目标。这是一个富有意义的创意行动,也是惠灵顿秉承的培养全球公民的使命的纯粹表达。

 

When a school has a strong community, it is palpable the moment you set foot on campus. It shines through in every instance from the interactions in the classrooms and corridors to the way they play on the pitch.

当一所学校拥有一个强大的社区时,你踏入校园的那一刻就能够感同身受。从教室和走廊的互动到他们在球场上的比赛方式,每一个环节都充满了活力。
